Service Provided: Full Hoarder House Clearance & Deep Cleaning
Duration: 4 days
Team Size: 4 professionals
Background
In early June 2025, Sophie’s Cleaning Company was contacted by the daughter of an elderly gentleman living in Longhoughton, a quiet coastal village in Northumberland. The client had recently been admitted to care due to declining health, and the family had discovered that the property had not been maintained for several years.
The home was heavily cluttered, with signs of compulsive hoarding disorder. Items were stacked floor to ceiling in some rooms. Many areas were inaccessible. There were concerns about structural safety, hygiene, and potential biohazards.
Initial Assessment
During our free on-site assessment, we observed:
Severe accumulation of general household items, unopened mail, newspapers, and packaging.
Perishable food waste dating back years in the kitchen.
Rodent droppings in the loft and pantry areas.
One room that had been entirely sealed off with clutter.
Significant odour issues, particularly in the living room and hallway.
Water damage and mould around the bathroom and kitchen sinks.
We determined this project required a sensitive, phased approach due to the emotional connection the family had with the property and the mental health considerations involved.
Our Approach
We broke the job into four key phases, carried out over four days.
Day 1: Decluttering & Sorting
Our team began in the hallway and kitchen, identifying and separating salvageable personal belongings, important documents, and family heirlooms.
We used clear labelling to mark items to keep, donate, recycle, or dispose of.
30+ bin bags of general waste were removed by the end of the day.
Day 2: Hazard Removal & Deep Clearance
We tackled the bathroom and pantry, which showed signs of long-term neglect.
Removed damaged cabinetry, spoiled food, and unsanitary soft furnishings.
Liaised with a local pest control firm for rodent-proofing after finding a small nest behind the washing machine.
Day 3: Biohazard Cleaning & Deodorising
Used hospital-grade antibacterial and enzymatic cleaners for all hard surfaces.
Treated mould and mildew areas with industrial-strength fungicides.
Ran ozone machines overnight to neutralise odours in enclosed spaces.
Day 4: Deep Cleaning & Finishing Touches
Full deep clean of carpets, skirting boards, and windows.
Light fixture replacements, basic wall sanitising, and floor polishing.
A final walk-through with the client’s daughter ensured satisfaction and reassurance.
Outcome
At the end of the project, we had:
Removed over 3 tonnes of waste (disposed of responsibly).
Recovered several important family photo albums and legal documents.
Fully restored 5 rooms to a clean, safe, and usable condition.
Helped the family regain control of the property, which they are now preparing for sale.
The family was extremely grateful and left a five-star review, citing our team’s respectful attitude, non-judgmental professionalism, and attention to detail.
